It’s the most exciting time of the year for marketers as it’s Christmas advert season! Every year the bar seems to get higher with brands spending more and more to try and get to the top spot. Here’s a rundown of some of the latest campaigns that have been revealed so far…
Mog was my favourite Christmas advert last year, so I’ve had really high hopes for Sainsbury’s. This year, they’re reaching for the heartstrings with a spritely animated video that says the best gift you can give your family at Christmas is your own time. What’s really interesting is the models for the ad use full colour 3D printed faces – the first time these have been used in an animation production in the UK. The ad was created by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, its last for the retailer after Sainsbury’s decision to shift creative accounts to Widen & Kennedy.
Mrs Claus is probably my favourite Christmas advert this year. It has the perfect balance of warmth, empathy, and humour. M&S have modernised Mrs Claus, turning her into a super trendy Christmas hero. I mean, not only is she reading “Fifty Shades of Red”, Mrs Claus has a James Bond style wardrobe and underground heli-pad, complete with a helicopter named R-DOLF. Amazing. The ad was directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Tom Hooper, the man behind The Danish Girl and The King’s Speech. The track comes from Rachel Portman, who wrote the music for the movie Chocolat.
Another really lovely story about a robin’s epic journey home comes from Waitrose. The tale follows the young Scandinavian robin’s eventful, often dangerous journey as it flees predators and crosses mountains and seas for migration. The advert carries the slogan ‘At Christmas, there’s nothing quite like Waitrose’, which sends a strong message about connecting with your loved ones during the festive period. The advert has taken a leaf from sister retailer’s John Lewis’s book. It is made by adam&eveDDB, best known for making an array of commercials for the department store.
