Google Releases Social Search Globally

Google first introduced Social Search in 2009 as an experimental feature designed to help users find more relevant information about their friends. Since then they have been making steady improvements, and this week it was announced that they would be releasing it globally.

Facebook Wins Patent for Tagging

Facebook has now filed and received a patent for tagging photos. The patent called “Tagging digital media”, describes a method which “includes selecting a digital media and selecting region within the digital media”. Tagging is part of the reason for Facebook’s explosion onto the social media scene, and this latest patent isn’t just limited to “the context of a social network.”

LinkedIn Goes Public

After opening to $83 per share and a market cap of $7.8 million, LinkedIn closed at $93.86 per share, giving the company a valuation of $8.9 billion. Although the professional social network priced at $45 per share, trading started at $83 (up 84 percent) and reached as high as $122.70 and as low as $80.

Angry Birds Tops 200 Million Downloads

This week it was announced that Angry Birds downloads have topped 200 million. To give this some context, the highly popular Foursqaure app recently reached 10 million downloads. Whilst much of Angry Birds’ success is down to the iPad and iPhone, the franchise has moved in a variety of new directions.
