It’s that time of year when brands and department stores put on their best show and fight it out for the number one Christmas TV advert. Last year, Sainsbury’s stole my heart as I completely fell in love with Mog and her Christmas disasters. Who’s going to win the top spot this year? Take a look at some of the campaigns that have been revealed so far.
Burberry was the first of the fashion brands to reveal their cinematic take on Thomas Burberry’s life. The three-minute clip celebrates the brand’s 160th anniversary and was directed by Asif Kapadia, famously known for his documentary, ‘Amy’. Featuring an all-star cast, Burberry have chosen Domhnall Gleeson to play Thomas Burberry, while Sienna Miller depicts his fictional first love.
The film shares some of Burberry’s greatest historic moments, including the invention of gabardin, the waterproof fabric still used in all of Burberry’s trenchcoats.
Sticking with a similar style to last year, House of Fraser’s Christmas advert is full of attitude and edge. “Christmas is coming to get you” features Laura Mvula’s festive take on the Fugees classic “Ready Or Not”. The theme is all about the build up to Christmas, with some fantastic choreography and a giant chess board that challenges the festive clichés.
Also revealed this week was Argos’s energetic advert featuring 8ft ice-skating Yetis and lots of snow! The slightly bizarre advert captures the excitement of Christmas perfectly, and apparently acts as a metaphor for Argos’s super-speedy Same Day Fast Track Delivery.
